Responsible Breeding...

Finding a bullmastiff breeder is not always easy since most reputable breeders do not advertise in the newspaper but rely instead on "word of mouth" referrals. So where does one look and, when you find breeders, how do you know if they are good?

First, avoid buying your bullmastiff on impulse. As with any major decision that involves a long term commitment and significant expense, we encourage you to educate yourself, shop ahead of when you plan to buy, visit and talk with as many breeders as possible and compare. You will want to make sure you are buying the right dog for you and your family and that you are buying from a breeder you feel comfortable with.

The CNBC Northwest Breeder listing is a good place to start because it will give you regional listing of individual breeders with whom you can begin visiting. The breeder listing is not meant to be an endorsement but rather a tool to help you "shop," gather information and make a decision that is right for you. You might want to also visit the American Bullmastiff Association site for a more nationally based breeders’ list.

Visit local or area AKC sanctioned all breed dog shows on weekends and find out when and where the bullmastiffs are showing (see our News & Events section for upcoming Northwest Shows and Events). This is a good way to meet a number of different breeders and see different dogs all in one place. If you decide to go to a show for that purpose, make sure you allow yourself time to visit before and after the dogs show. If possible, call breeders ahead of time to see if they are attending and whether or not they have time to talk with you at the show.

Finally, if you know someone who owns a Bullmastiff don’t be afraid to ask them where they got their dog and their experience with the breeder. Most owners in the Northwest love to talk about their dog and are happy to refer you. Read as much material as possible (our Links and Resources Page is a good place to start), and study the AKC standard so you know what to be looking for.

Once you have found breeders to talk with you about buying a bullmastiff you should prepare yourself to be interviewed by the breeders and to interview the breeders. A reputable breeder will want to know a lot about you and why you want a bullmastiff and you should, in turn, want to know a lot about their breeding practices. A good guide on interviewing a breeder can be found at bullmastiff.org

Ultimately, reputable breeders are confident and have nothing to hide. They are willing to refer you to other breeders and encourage you to talk to individuals who have bought dogs from them. They answer your questions freely and without hesitation or defensiveness. Reputable breeders want the best possible home for all their puppies and encourage informed, conscientious buyers.
